A NIGHT OF SHARED HUMANITY IN RIONEGRO
On the evening of 10 July 2026, I had the honour of participating in another unforgettable poetry reading as part of the 36th Medellín International Poetry Festival, one of the world’s most respected celebrations of poetry and peace.
The reading took place at the Casa de la Cultura in Rionegro, Antioquia. An attentive audience gathered to celebrate the power of poetry to connect people across languages, cultures, and continents.
Sharing the stage with distinguished poets Luz Helena Cordero (Colombia), Leandro Calle (Argentina), Niels Hav (Denmark), and Dwayne Morgan (Canada), I felt once again that poetry is a universal language. Although we came from different countries and spoke different tongues, our poems met in the same place with the shared hope of touching human hearts.
Luz Helena Cordero of Colombia opened the evening with a graceful and deeply reflective presence. Drawing on her rich background as both a psychologist and a poet, her work explores the emotional depths of human relationships with sensitivity and wisdom. Her reading invited the audience into a quiet space of contemplation, reminding us that poetry can illuminate the inner world as powerfully as it speaks to the realities around us. Her warm, thoughtful voice set a beautiful tone for an evening dedicated to hope, peace, and our shared humanity.
Representing both Vietnam, the land of my birth, and Australia, the country I now call home, was a deeply meaningful experience. Before reading my poems, I shared a personal reflection with the audience. Leaving one’s homeland is never easy. It takes years to build a new life, the longing for home never truly fades. The joy of returning is always filled with deep emotion.
I spoke of my parents, whose faces, voices, and love I continue to embrace wherever I go. They live vividly in my memory and return again and again in my poems. I shared that although I have found my place in Australia, every journey back to Vietnam reminds me that no matter how far we travel, our hearts never stop returning to where our roots began.
I also reflected on my life as both a teacher and a poet. Distance has never weakened my relationship with Vietnamese poetry. Living between two cultures has taught me that poetry is memory, identity, and a bridge between people. Reading THE SHAPE OF RETURN in Vietnamese, I felt deeply moved by the audience’s warmth and attentiveness. Even without understanding every word, they understood the emotions behind them, proving once again that genuine poetry transcends language.
Argentinian poet, translator, and university lecturer Leandro Calle brought his poetry and a powerful voice of advocacy for culture. During the evening, he shared a public appeal calling for continued and strengthened support for the Medellín International Poetry Festival, describing it as a symbol of peace, coexistence, and cultural commitment that has earned worldwide admiration. His words reflected the sentiments of many international poets who recognise the festival as an extraordinary space. Poetry reaches thousands of people and continues to affirm Medellín as a true city of poetry.
Danish poet Niels Hav brought to the evening the elegance and subtle wit for which his poetry is widely admired. Having travelled extensively across the world, his writing reflects both a deep curiosity about humanity and a refined sensitivity to everyday life. His reading combined warmth, humour, and philosophical insight, inviting the audience to pause and reflect on the beauty, complexity, and occasional irony of the human condition. His presence added a distinctive Nordic voice to the festival’s rich international dialogue.
Canadian poet Dwayne Morgan brought remarkable energy, authenticity, and humanity to the stage. Internationally recognised as a poet, performer, mentor, and advocate for the spoken word, he shared a voice shaped by decades of empowering others through poetry. His presence reminded us that poetry is an art form and a means of giving voice to those who have too often gone unheard. With warmth, conviction, and generosity, he inspired the audience to see poetry as a force for connection, understanding, and meaningful social change.
An equally important part of the evening was the dedication of the Spanish-language readers, who gave voice to our poems for the local audience with remarkable sensitivity and care. Their thoughtful interpretations allowed our words to cross linguistic boundaries while preserving their emotional depth. The programme was warmly guided by master of ceremonies Jessica Acosta, whose professionalism and genuine enthusiasm created an atmosphere of welcome and connection throughout the event. It was especially touching to see her accompanied by her husband and young daughter, whose quiet presence and support reflected the spirit of community and generosity that defines the Medellín International Poetry Festival. Together with the other three Spanish-language readers, they reminded us that behind every international poetry reading is a team of devoted people who make dialogue across cultures possible.
Throughout the evening, the audience listened with remarkable warmth and openness. Even when words were translated, the emotions travelled freely. Smiles, thoughtful silence, heartfelt applause, and conversations after the reading reminded me that genuine poetry needs no passport. It speaks directly to the human spirit.
The theme of this year’s festival Towards the Human Spring could not have been more fitting. Throughout the week, poets from around the world gathered not only to read poems but to affirm our collective belief that compassion, dialogue, and culture remain essential foundations for peace.
As a specialist teacher in Australia, I witness every day how language has the power to transform lives. As a poet, I believe poetry does the same. It invites us to listen more deeply, to understand one another, and to recognise our shared humanity. In Rionegro, I saw that belief come alive once again as voices from five nations met in one room, united by a common faith in the enduring power of poetry.
I leave this evening with profound gratitude to the organisers of the Medellín International Poetry Festival, my fellow poets, the interpreters who carried our words across languages, and the people of Rionegro for their generous welcome. The memories of this reading will travel home with me across the Pacific, reminding me that wherever poetry is heard, hope continues to flourish.

La noche del 10 de julio de 2026 tuve el honor de participar en otra inolvidable lectura poética del 36.º Festival Internacional de Poesía de Medellín, uno de los encuentros de poesía y por la paz más prestigiosos del mundo.
La lectura se realizó en la Casa de la Cultura de Rionegro, Antioquia, con un público atento y entusiasta reunido para celebrar el poder de la poesía como puente entre lenguas, culturas y continentes.
Compartí el escenario con los destacados poetas Luz Helena Cordero (Colombia), Leandro Calle (Argentina), Niels Hav (Dinamarca) y Dwayne Morgan (Canadá). Una vez más confirmé que la poesía es un lenguaje universal. Aunque provenimos de distintos países y hablamos idiomas diferentes, nuestros poemas se encontraron en un mismo espacio con la esperanza común de tocar el corazón humano.
La poeta colombiana Luz Helena Cordero abrió la velada con una presencia serena y profundamente reflexiva. Gracias a su amplia trayectoria como psicóloga y poetisa, su obra exploró con sensibilidad y sabiduría la profundidad de las relaciones humanas. Su lectura invitó al público a un momento de contemplación, recordándonos que la poesía puede iluminar el mundo interior con la misma fuerza con la que interpreta la realidad que nos rodea. Su voz cálida y pausada marcó el tono perfecto para una noche dedicada a la esperanza, la paz y nuestra humanidad compartida.
Representar tanto a Vietnam, la tierra donde nací, como a Australia, el país que hoy es mi hogar fue una experiencia profundamente significativa. Antes de leer mis poemas, compartí una reflexión personal con el público. Dejar la tierra natal nunca es fácil. Construir una nueva vida requiere años, pero la nostalgia por el lugar de origen nunca desaparece. La alegría de regresar siempre está llena de emoción.
Hablé de mis padres, cuyos rostros, voces y amor continúan acompañándome dondequiera que vaya. Permanecen vivos en mi memoria y regresan una y otra vez a mis poemas. También compartí que, aunque he encontrado mi lugar en Australia, cada viaje de regreso a Vietnam me recuerda que, por muy lejos que viajemos, el corazón nunca deja de volver al lugar donde nacieron nuestras raíces.
También reflexioné sobre mi vida como maestra y poeta. La distancia nunca ha debilitado mi vínculo con la poesía vietnamita. Vivir entre dos culturas me ha enseñado que la poesía es memoria, identidad y un puente entre las personas. Al leer mi poema La forma del regreso en vietnamita, me conmovió profundamente la calidez y la atención del público. Aunque no comprendieran cada palabra, sí comprendieron las emociones que transmitía. Fue una prueba más de que la verdadera poesía trasciende cualquier idioma.
El poeta, traductor y profesor universitario argentino Leandro Calle aportó una voz comprometida con la cultura. Durante la velada hizo un llamado público para que el Festival Internacional de Poesía de Medellín continúe recibiendo un sólido apoyo, destacándolo como un símbolo de paz, convivencia y compromiso cultural admirado en todo el mundo. Sus palabras reflejaron el sentir de muchos poetas internacionales que consideran este festival un espacio verdaderamente extraordinario, donde la poesía llega a miles y reafirma que Medellín es una auténtica ciudad de la poesía.
El poeta danés Niels Hav aportó la elegancia y el sutil sentido del humor que distinguen su obra. Sus numerosos viajes por el mundo reflejan una poesía marcada por la profunda curiosidad por el ser humano y una fina sensibilidad hacia la vida cotidiana. Su lectura combinó calidez, humor e inteligencia, invitando al público a reflexionar sobre la belleza, la complejidad y, en ocasiones, la ironía de la condición humana. Su presencia enriqueció el diálogo internacional del festival con una voz nórdica muy particular.
El poeta canadiense Dwayne Morgan llenó el escenario de energía, autenticidad y humanidad. Reconocido internacionalmente como poeta, intérprete, mentor y promotor de la poesía oral, compartió una voz forjada durante décadas de trabajo, inspirando y acompañando a otras personas a través de la poesía. Su presencia nos recordó que la poesía no solo es una forma de arte, sino también una manera de dar voz a quienes durante mucho tiempo no han sido escuchados. Su calidez, convicción y generosidad, inspiró al público a entender la poesía como una fuerza capaz de unir, generar comprensión y promover un cambio social significativo.
Una parte igualmente importante de la velada fue la dedicación de los lectores en español, quienes dieron voz a nuestros poemas para el público local con enorme sensibilidad y respeto. Sus cuidadosas interpretaciones permitieron que nuestras palabras cruzaran las fronteras del idioma sin perder su profundidad emocional.
El programa estuvo conducido con calidez por la maestra de ceremonias Jessica Acosta, cuya profesionalidad y entusiasmo crearon un ambiente acogedor durante toda la noche. Fue especialmente emotivo verla acompañada por su esposo y su pequeña hija, cuya presencia reflejó el espíritu de comunidad, generosidad y apoyo mutuo que caracteriza al Festival Internacional de Poesía de Medellín. Junto con los otros tres lectores en español, nos recordaron que detrás de cada lectura internacional existe un equipo de personas comprometidas que hace posible el diálogo entre culturas.

Tối ngày 10 tháng 7 năm 2026, tôi vinh dự được tham gia một đêm trình diễn thơ không thể nào quên trong khuôn khổ Liên hoan Thơ Quốc tế Medellín lần thứ 36, một trong những lễ hội thơ ca uy tín và có ảnh hưởng nhất thế giới. Thơ ca trở thành tiếng nói của hòa bình và tình người.
Buổi đọc thơ diễn ra tại sân Nhà Văn hóa Casa de la Cultura ở thành phố Rionegro, tỉnh Antioquia, Colombia. Đông đảo khán giả đã hiện diện với sự chăm chú và cởi mở để cùng nhau tôn vinh sức mạnh kỳ diệu của thi ca, sức mạnh kết nối con người vượt qua mọi ranh giới của ngôn ngữ, văn hóa và châu lục.

Mở đầu chương trình là nữ thi sĩ Colombia Luz Helena Cordero, người mang đến một phong thái điềm đạm, tinh tế và đầy chiều sâu suy tưởng. Với nền tảng vừa là nhà tâm lý học vừa là nhà thơ, chị khai mở những tầng sâu cảm xúc trong các mối quan hệ con người bằng sự nhạy cảm và trí tuệ. Những bài thơ của chị đưa khán giả bước vào một không gian lắng đọng của chiêm nghiệm, nhắc chúng ta rằng thi ca không chỉ phản chiếu hiện thực mà còn có thể soi sáng thế giới nội tâm sâu kín nhất. Giọng đọc ấm áp, điềm tĩnh và đầy nhân ái của chị đã mở ra một đêm thơ chan chứa hy vọng, hòa bình và tình người.
Là một khách mời được sinh ra tại Việt Nam và hiện đang sống tại Úc, trải nghiệm này đối với tôi thật thiêng liêng và ý nghĩa, nhất là mỗi khi tên của hai đất nước được xướng lên.
Trước khi đọc thơ, tôi đã chia sẻ với khán giả vài tâm sự từ chính cuộc đời mình. Rời xa quê hương chưa bao giờ là điều dễ dàng, phải mất nhiều năm để xây dựng một cuộc sống mới nhưng nỗi nhớ quê chưa bao giờ vơi cạn và mỗi lần trở về luôn ngập tràn cảm xúc.
Ba mẹ, gia đình, quê hương là tình yêu và tiếng nói mà mà tôi luôn mang theo trên mọi nẻo đường. Ba mẹ vẫn hiện hữu sống động trong ký ức và luôn trở về trong thơ tôi. Tôi cũng chia sẻ rằng, dù đã tìm thấy mái nhà của mình nơi nước Úc, mỗi chuyến trở lại Việt Nam đều nhắc tôi nhớ rằng: con người có thể đi rất xa, nhưng trái tim thì chưa bao giờ thôi hướng về nơi cội nguồn bắt đầu.
Tôi cũng nói về cuộc đời mình trong hai vai trò một người giáo viên và một người làm thơ. Khoảng cách địa lý chưa bao giờ làm phai nhạt mối gắn bó của tôi với thi ca Việt Nam. Sống giữa hai nền văn hóa giúp tôi hiểu rằng thơ ca chính là bản sắc và là chiếc cầu nối con người với con người. Khi đọc bài thơ Quê hương bằng tiếng Việt, tôi vô cùng xúc động trước sự lắng nghe đầy trân trọng của khán giả. Dù không hiểu từng lời thơ, họ vẫn cảm nhận được cảm xúc ẩn chứa trong từng câu chữ. Điều đó một lần nữa chứng minh rằng thơ ca đích thực luôn vượt lên trên mọi rào cản ngôn ngữ.
Nhà thơ, dịch giả và giảng viên đại học Leandro Calle của Argentina đã mang đến chương trình những bài thơ giàu sức gợi mà còn một tiếng nói mạnh mẽ bảo vệ văn hóa. Trong buổi tối hôm ấy, anh công khai kêu gọi tiếp tục tăng cường sự ủng hộ dành cho Liên hoan Thơ Quốc tế Medellín, xem đây là biểu tượng của hòa bình, chung sống và cam kết văn hóa đã được cả thế giới ngưỡng mộ. Những lời phát biểu của anh cũng phản ánh tâm tư của rất nhiều thi sĩ quốc tế, những người xem Medellín là một không gian thi ca vô cùng đặc biệt, nơi thơ ca lan tỏa đến hàng nghìn con người và tiếp tục khẳng định Medellín xứng đáng là thành phố của thi ca.
Nhà thơ Đan Mạch Niels Hav mang đến đêm thơ vẻ đẹp thanh lịch cùng chất dí dỏm tinh tế vốn đã trở thành dấu ấn trong sáng tác của ông. Với những chuyến đi qua nhiều quốc gia trên thế giới, thơ ông phản chiếu những suy ngẫm sâu sắc về con người cùng khả năng cảm nhận tinh vi vẻ đẹp của đời sống thường nhật. Giọng đọc của ông dung hòa giữa sự ấm áp, hài hước và chiều sâu triết lý, khiến người nghe dừng lại để suy ngẫm về vẻ đẹp, sự phức tạp cũng như những nghịch lý đầy thú vị của thân phận con người. Sự hiện diện của ông đã góp thêm một tiếng nói Bắc Âu độc đáo vào cuộc đối thoại quốc tế giàu sắc màu của liên hoan.
Nhà thơ Canada Dwayne Morgan đem đến sân khấu một nguồn năng lượng mạnh mẽ, chân thành và giàu tính nhân văn. Được quốc tế biết đến như một nhà thơ trình diễn, người cố vấn và người truyền cảm hứng cho nghệ thuật spoken word, ông mang theo tiếng nói được hun đúc qua nhiều thập niên đồng hành cùng cộng đồng bằng thơ ca. Sự hiện diện của ông nhắc chúng ta rằng thơ không chỉ là một loại hình nghệ thuật, mà còn là phương tiện để cất lên tiếng nói cho những con người vốn quá lâu chưa từng được lắng nghe. Bằng sự nồng hậu, niềm tin và lòng quảng đại, ông truyền cảm hứng để khán giả nhìn thấy thơ ca như một sức mạnh kết nối, thấu hiểu và tạo nên những đổi thay tích cực trong xã hội.
Một phần không thể thiếu làm nên thành công của buổi đọc thơ chính là sự tận tâm của các nghệ sĩ đọc thơ bằng tiếng Tây Ban Nha. Họ đã truyền tải thơ của chúng tôi đến khán giả địa phương bằng tất cả sự tinh tế và đồng cảm, giúp những câu thơ vượt qua rào cản ngôn ngữ mà vẫn giữ nguyên chiều sâu cảm xúc.
Chương trình được dẫn dắt duyên dáng bởi người dẫn chương trình Jessica Acosta, với phong cách chuyên nghiệp và lòng nhiệt thành đã tạo nên bầu không khí gần gũi, ấm áp suốt buổi tối. Hình ảnh chị đi cùng chồng và cô con gái nhỏ khiến tôi đặc biệt xúc động. Sự hiện diện lặng lẽ nhưng đầy yêu thương ấy phản chiếu đúng tinh thần cộng đồng và lòng hiếu khách đã làm nên bản sắc của Liên hoan Thơ Quốc tế Medellín. Cùng với ba nghệ sĩ đọc thơ tiếng Tây Ban Nha khác, họ nhắc chúng tôi rằng phía sau mỗi chương trình thơ quốc tế luôn có biết bao con người tận tụy âm thầm góp sức để cuộc đối thoại giữa các nền văn hóa trở thành hiện thực.
Suốt buổi tối, khán giả lắng nghe bằng tất cả sự nồng hậu và rộng mở. Dẫu những bài thơ phải đi qua cầu nối của bản dịch, cảm xúc vẫn tự do lan tỏa. Những nụ cười, những phút lặng im suy tư, những tràng pháo tay chân thành và những cuộc trò chuyện sau chương trình đều nhắc tôi rằng thơ ca chân chính không cần hộ chiếu. Thơ nói trực tiếp với tâm hồn con người.
Chủ đề của liên hoan năm nay Hướng tới Mùa xuân Nhân loại (Towards the Human Spring) thật sự rất phù hợp với không khí đêm nay. Trong suốt tuần lễ liên hoan, các nhà thơ từ khắp nơi trên thế giới đọc thơ và cùng nhau khẳng định một niềm tin chung rằng lòng trắc ẩn, đối thoại và văn hóa vẫn luôn là những nền tảng không thể thiếu của hòa bình.
Là một giáo viên chuyên môn tại Australia, mỗi ngày tôi đều chứng kiến ngôn ngữ có thể làm thay đổi cuộc đời con người như thế nào. Là một nhà thơ, tôi tin thơ ca cũng sở hữu sức mạnh ấy. Thơ mời gọi chúng ta lắng nghe sâu hơn, thấu hiểu nhau hơn và nhận ra bản chất chung của nhân loại. Tại Rionegro, tôi đã một lần nữa được chứng kiến niềm tin ấy trở thành hiện thực, khi tiếng nói từ năm quốc gia cùng hội tụ trong một căn phòng, united bởi một niềm tin chung vào sức sống bền bỉ và trường tồn của thi ca.
Tôi rời Rionegro với lòng biết ơn sâu sắc dành cho Ban Tổ chức Liên hoan Thơ Quốc tế Medellín, các thi hữu quốc tế, những người phiên dịch đã đưa thơ chúng tôi vượt qua mọi biên giới ngôn ngữ, cùng người dân Rionegro đã dành cho chúng tôi sự đón tiếp vô cùng nồng hậu. Kỷ niệm về đêm thơ này sẽ theo tôi vượt Thái Bình Dương trở về Australia, nhắc tôi rằng ở bất cứ nơi đâu thơ ca còn được cất lên, ở đó hy vọng vẫn tiếp tục nở hoa.
